Hatching New Learning in Kindergarten
In Kindergarten, students explored the similarities between the survival needs of plants, animals, and people, learning how to care for living creatures and create suitable habitats. This hands-on lesson culminated in an exciting project—hatching baby chicks! Students observed eggs in an incubator, documented the changes as embryos developed, and witnessed the incredible moment when the chicks emerged. Over nearly two weeks, they took on the responsibility of caring for the chicks, providing food, water, and a clean brooder box.
One of the most memorable moments of the project was watching the chicks hatch. Students were amazed by the process and fascinated by how each chick looked unique. However, an important challenge arose when not every egg hatched. Ms. Oertling and Mrs. Innocent guided students through this lesson in life cycles, helping them understand that not all eggs develop into chicks—and that’s okay.
This week, students bid farewell to their feathered friends as the chicks returned to their farm. The class wrote heartfelt goodbye letters to celebrate their time together, wishing the chicks a happy life. This experience left a lasting impact, and the Kindergarten team looks forward to continuing this beloved tradition for future students!
