Physical Education

Preschool

The children develop their gross motor skills during a regularly scheduled recess. During that time they ride tricycles, climb on playground equipment, and play with balls under the supervision of theirĀ  teachers. At other times during the day, they enjoy playing on the grassy West Lawn area.

Prekindergarten

The children develop their gross motor skills during a regularly scheduled recess. During that time they ride tricycles, climb on playground equipment, and play with balls under the supervision of their teachers. At other times during the day, they enjoy playing on the grassy West Lawn area. Prekindergarten children also have a weekly yoga class which helps them develop their ability to concentrate, become aware of the space they take up in relation to others, and gain flexibility and balance.

Kindergarten

The children develop gross motor skills, a positive self-image, and physical health and readiness skills for individual development, sportsmanship, and teamwork. The weekly Kindergarten sports classes take place in the School’s gymnasium in Old Pine Community Center, located across the street from the School.

Grade One

The curriculum focuses on accelerating coordination and developing hand-eye skills, as well as developing a positive self-image and cooperation with others. The students learn the fundamentals of baseball, softball, basketball, soccer and lacrosse.

Children participate in the Presidential Physical Fitness Challenge. Events include sprints, distance runs, pull ups, and shuttle run.

All students Grades One - Eight participate in Field Day. Field Day is a series of track and field events and is the highlight of the year long Grey vs. Garnet competitions. Children begin preparing for the individual events three weeks prior to Field Day during regular Sports classes.

This year builds on the fourth grade program, but with an emphasis on team building and game strategies. Fifth graders are coached to prepare them for inter-scholastic sports.
