Library
Preschool through Sixth Grade have weekly library classes with the school librarian. During the Early Childhood Division library classes, the librarian reads stories, teaches the children about proper behavior in the library, and shows them how to make book selections.
During Lower School Library classes, the librarian reads stories and assists the children in making book selections. The librarian also helps the children find and use research materials for special projects.
Upper School students use the library on a regular basis to select pleasure reading books and to choose resources for papers and projects. The librarian works with the students to improve their research skills and help them focus their research plans. Library skills are taught to Fifth Grade and Sixth Grade, while Seventh Grade and Eight Grade seek help as needed.
When deciding what books should be added to the library’s collection, the librarian consults current library journals and purchases titles that include Newberry, Caldecott, and Coretta Scott King honorees. The Mary Hogan Leslie Fund, which honors a former parent and library volunteer, is an endowment for the purchase each year of the Caldecott and Newberry award winners. Teachers keep the librarian informed about research projects and lesson plans.
