The Rooftop Garden- A New Upper School Tradition Is Grown
March 26th, 2009
For many years, the Fifth Grade homeroom has been located on the third floor next to a mysterious twelve-foot by eight-foot outdoor deck. Now, we are going to put this space to work for the School growing fresh fruits and vegetables. The students will germinate seeds and have them grow out in the sunlight of this deck starting in the spring and the plants will continue to grow through the summer. The Fifth Grade students began their Roman studies and eventually will label the plants with Latin names. Children in the Summer Camp will help maintain the plants. In no time, Helianthus annuus (sunflower) and Lactuca sativa (lettuce) will be growing on top of St. Peter’s School and will be harvested by the students at the beginning of the next school year!
