St. Peter’s Students Learn About the Peking Opera
March 20th, 2009
On Thursday, March 12th, St. Peter’s students in First through Sixth Grades traveled to Friends Select School for a special performance by Jamie Guan, an actor and choreographer trained at the Beijing Institute for Performing Arts. Mr. Guan performed with the Peking Opera Troupe for 15 years before coming to New York to make his Broadway debut. During his demonstration, Mr. Guan wore a costume from the Monkey King. While applying his makeup onstage, he explained the history, training, costumes, and makeup of the Peking Opera. He outlined the story of the Monkey King and performed four excerpts from the opera using acrobatic and martial arts skills. The performance was followed by a question and answer period. Several students were selected to join Mr. Guan onstage to learn some martial arts skills. It was a fascinating show and a unique opportunity to introduce the students to an art form that they would otherwise have little possibility of seeing!
