Miss Lewin Teaches at Ronald McDonald Summer Camp
September 17th, 2009
This summer, Miss Lewin (Kindergaten teacher) spent one week in August volunteering at the Ronald McDonald Camp in the Poconos. The Ronald McDonald Camp is a one-week sleep away camp that is run by the Philadelphia Ronald McDonald House and hosted by Camp Timbertops in Greeley, Pennsylvania. The campers are children who have or had childhood cancer and their siblings. Over 100 volunteers and a full medical team from Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia staff the camp. Miss Lewin worked in the camp’s “Art Shack”, running projects like handprint pillowcases, plaster casting of faces and hands, and collage picture frames. She also assisted with a “visiting artist” program where artists visited the camp to teach mandala making, silk scarf marbling, and pipe cleaner sculpture. When not in the Art Shack, Miss Lewin was paired up with a wonderful cabin of 11 and 12 year old girls and enjoyed campfires, carnival, pool parties, bug juice, and all the wonders of a week in the wilderness with great volunteers and awesome kids.
