Building Individual and Team Skills

St.Peter’s School values participation in sports. We provide multiple opportunities for our children to develop their athletic talents and to obtain physical exercise. Our well-planned sports program imparts important sportsmanship, team-building skills, and positive attitudes towards fitness and health during a child’s pivotal years. For this reason, sports is mandatory for all students. St. Peter’s weaves athletics into the daily
curriculum. Children in K-5 take sports or physical education at least three times a week. The commitment rises to more times a week when they join the interscholastic program in Grade 6. On our competitive teams we promote individual and group development while ensuring all children have playing time on the field.

Matching Age and Ability Lower School Sports

Our Sports Director introduces the children to a wide range of activities, believing this best encourages the children to later specialize in a particular favorite. Traditional fun gym games such as “capture the flag” and kickball are also played.

GradesĀ One and Two

The curriculum focuses on accelerating coordination and developing hand-eye skills. The students learn the fundamentals of baseball, softball, basketball, soccer and lacrosse.

Grades Three and Four

Intramural play is introduced. Co-ed games further the skills developed in the first two years of the program. The children play competitive ball games including soccer, baseball, softball, basketball, lacrosse,
floor hockey, and football.

Grade Five

This year builds on the fourth grade program, but with an emphasis on team building and game strategies. Fifth Graders are also coached to prepare them for interscholastic sports.

Grades Six, Seven, and Eight

The interscholastic schedule beings in earnest now, with children staying until 4 p.m. to accommodate our extensive upper school sports programs. The Upper School boys and girls sports programs diverge with separate coaches for each gender.

The Upper School Sporting Calendar

Inter-scholastic soccer runs September through November 15th. Inter-scholastic basketball
starts in November and continues until March 1st. In March, the Upper School students swim at a local pool. The boys and girls swim on separate days, twice weekly, and are coached by a trained swim instructor. In April, the spring sports program begins with baseball and softball. Then, in preparation for Field Day, the
Upper School students practice their track and field skills.
